Competition Boundaries

All club competitions and end-of-year trophy fish must be caught within the MBFC boundaries: from Cape Rodney out to the 45m depth contour north of Little Barrier, east of Horn Rock inside the 45m contour (175° 12.300E), then due south along 175° 12.300E to just east of Waiheke at Te Kaiahorawaru Point. Club Trophy Rules

To be eligible for an end-of-year trophy, your fish must be weighed in and a photo posted to the MBFC Facebook page or the members WhatsApp. To arrange a weigh-in, call Matt Gillespie (Goose) on 021 869 232 or James Alexander on 021 633 456.

To qualify, a fish must be caught by a current fully paid member, within the competition year and MBFC boundaries, and measured on a club measure mat. Proof of capture location may be required (a photo of the fresh catch followed by a GPS screen, which can be zoomed out or partially hidden to protect your spot). Standard NZ fishing rules apply. Fish caught on a commercial charter, by spear, or on a longline from a boat are not eligible, and fish entered in any other competition are not eligible.

Remember: it is the skipper’s responsibility to only head out in conditions suited to the vessel and their own skill level. You are responsible for your own safety.

Measuring Guidelines

A clear photo of your fish correctly placed on an official measure is essential for your entry. Length is read to the nearest 0.5cm: the inner point of the tail V must touch or pass a line to count for that increment (a fish just over 50cm that doesn’t reach 50.5cm is recorded as 50.0cm). Spread the tail evenly along the midline — a squeezed tail may be marked down.

Photo checklist: shoot in landscape from directly above; take a few in case of shadows; the tip of the jaw must touch the end of the MBFC measure; keep the fish side-on with the tail V near the midline; use a flat surface; don’t distort the jaw; and measure fresh — don’t gut or gill the fish first or it may be ineligible. The committee may accept an entry with a length deduction, or disqualify any catch at its discretion.

To submit, post your photo and general location on the MBFC Facebook page (include the angler’s name if posting for someone else). Once the fishing committee approves it, your catch appears on the tournament leaderboard.
